MAFCAST#021 Alex Dowding
Alex Dowding is an animation producer at Submarine Studio in Amsterdam. He is currently working on the new Richard Linklater film: Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure (Boyhood, Scanner Darkly, Waking life).
Alex began his animation journey managing storyboard artists on a film called “The Tale of Despereaux”, a British/American 3D animated movie Directed by Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen. The film itself was a flop, but he was able to develop his skillset as “the guardian of editorial” which stood him in good stead for the future.
In 2007 a new Parisian studio was set up by the ex-president of 20th Century Fox Animation Chris Meledandri, called Illumination Entertainment. They were looking for a production manager in editorial and, luckily for Alex, he was the only person in Europe with the relevant experience in animation features. He worked there for 6 years on the Despicable Me franchise, The Lorax and through to pre-production on The Secret Life of Pets and Sing. He had a great time at Illumination, but after falling in love and with a Dutch woman the birth of his son brought him to The Netherlands. With animation work hard to come by at that time in the Netherlands he took a job on The Jungle Book at MPC in the UK. This was a difficult period, not only the late hours and tight deadlines but also being away from his family.
His next adventure after leaving MPC (as they embarked on The Lion King) was to join a small animation start-up in Rotterdam called Zoho Studio. Here he worked in development to get a feature film off the ground which would use a new kind of pipeline. Combining 3D animation with live action miniature sets, robotically filmed and integrated in real time. But when this ship began to sink into the abyss, Alex managed to hop on the “Submarine” to work on Amazon Prime series “Undone” directed by Hisko Hulsing and has now been working there for three years.
